Most of us look forward to winter and the holiday season. It makes us think of gingerbread, endless school holidays, cosy lie-ins and the best parties of the year. Of course, it also means making some serious changes to our wardrobes. It's time to pack away your summer dresses and short shorts and slip into some of winter's latest styles.

1) Oversized sweaters
An oversized sweater is an absolute must-have for winter. These gloriously comfortable wool or cotton knits are as perfect for curling up on a chilly day as they are for meeting friends for lunch. If your style leans towards cute and chic, opt for a pastel pink or blue colour with a heart print or similarly patterned motif. If you'd prefer something a little more elegant, utilise this winter's palette of burgundy, wine and navy and go for a plain design instead. Wear your oversized sweater with jeans and slightly heeled boots for an effortlessly cosy and comfortable look.
2) Long coats
Every girl needs a long, winter coat. The most versatile design is, of course, a black trench with button detailing that ends mid-thigh. You can wear it over a printed dress, a pencil skirt and blouse or even with jeans or tights. Add a scarf for some faux European charm. If you've already got a black coat, opt for an elegant white or cream coat with black accents instead. A white coat will look particularly striking when combined with opaque black tights and ankle boots.
3) Leather Jackets
If you feel like playing the part of the gorgeous rebel, a leather jacket is an obvious wardrobe filler. This grunge chic choice looks best with a flattering asymmetrical zip and lots of buttons for added interest. Wear it on top of a red tartan dress, tights and lace up boots for a look that is bang on trend and just a little edgy. Of course, a good leather jacket is also right at home with your favourite pair of jeans.
4) Patterned tights
Tights are a girl's best friend in winter. They can dress up any outfit and let you rock your favourite dresses without feeling like you're freezing to death. However, wearing the same two pairs of opaque and sheer black tights can get a little boring. If you want to add some pizazz to your wardrobe, invest in some patterned tights. Instead of fishnet, which can look borderline tacky, look for unusual flower, heart, star or web cut out designs. If you're a quirky kind of girl, you might even want to try more colourful opaque tights with unusual cartoon patterns.
5) Boots
A good pair of boots will match almost all your winter outfits. If you've got the budget for it, invest in one pair of knee-high boots and one pair of ankle boots to make sure you're covered for every occasion. Black boots are classic and oh-so flattering, but if you'd like to soften your look, opt for chocolate suede boots instead. A slight heel will elongate your legs and give an illusion of added slimness.
